SMART TECHNOLOGY... DUMB USER

This idiot really takes the cake aye...A Wellington man who had 94 videos from up the skirts of 180 women or of them undressing in bathrooms has been given ten months home detention... the old filming up the skirt gig... There's always one idiot out there and this 36-year-old pleaded guilty to six counts of making intimate visual recording. I guess thats one of the down sides of having such smart technology... Some people do dumb things with it. Just look at how much pornography is available on the net. With all the benefits modern technology brings... there is also a dark side to the world wide web and governments everywhere need to exercise more control. Easier said than done... but we must try something... doing nothing is getting nowhere.

RUAUMOKO: THE GOD OF EARTHQUAKES

Ru ana te whenua - the earth starts to tremble

Ruaumoko represents the unborn child and to this day remains inside the womb of his mother Papatuanuku. Originally his parents Rangi and Papa were locked in a loving embrace that blocked out all light. Ranginui held tight to his beloved Papatuanuku. They had many children, all of whom lived in the tiny space between their parents. It was very dark and very cramped… nobody was exactly happy with the situation.

As the children grew up they became even more annoyed at the living conditions. But Ranginui and Papa would not break their embrace. Soon the children gathered deep in the darkness to discuss the problems of living in such conditions. Tangaroa was very keen to separate his parents but felt he was not nearly strong enough to complete such a task. Tawhirimatea apposed any talk of separation and threatened his brothers with eternal war if they even attempted to break them up. Tumatauenga scoffed at his brother’s emotional outburst and demanded their parents be separated immediately. Otherwise he would kill them himself.

Rongo and Haumia were vegetarians… they didn’t want any killing or bloodshed… and Ruaumoko wasn’t even born yet. He remained with his mother but Ruaumoko was not exactly happy with his plight either ...or the actions of his older brothers. As his parents were prized apart by Tane Mahuta… there was hardly time to adjust to the separation when a battle began that saw Tawhiri attack his brothers with violent winds and storms. From within his mother Ruaumoko could feel the battle rage above… he felt the pain of his mother as the rain and wind cut deep into her flesh.

As the anger welled up inside him... Ruaumoko began to kick and stomp inside Papa’s womb. This made the earth shake violently and the land rolled and twisted. Thus the unborn child of Rangi and Papa is seen by most as the god of earthquakes, thunder, lightning and volcanic activity. Many believe Ruaumoko turns his mother over to signify the difference between the cold months of winter and the warm months of summer.

Some believe he married the great Hinenuitepo and together they rule the shadows of the underworld. Ruaumoko is known by other names and he remains angry at being left as an unborn child. From time to time he stirs within his mother and causes the land to tremble and shake. Sometimes this causes volcanoes’ to explode into life ...and sometimes it’s the volcanoes that cause the earth to tremble and shake… either way… it’s Ruaumoko at the center of that anger.

On the east coast the earthquake god is summoned by the rousing words of a leader... “Ko Ruaumoko e ngunguru nei” (it is Ruaumoko who roars with anger)…and the people of the land roar in response... Au...Au... Aue ha... and thus they start the famous haka Ruaumoko. -(about the atua who carved their sacred mountain Hikurangi). The power of Ruaumoko can never be ignored… just ask the people of WELLINGTON who continues to witness the destructive power of the earthquake god... Ruaumoko. MAURIORA WHANAU

READ THE BREIF

In 1981... When I was at Design School in Wellington... we got a brief to present a 10 minute talk on ART. It had to be at least 10 minutes long... it had to be about an art form or artists that influence you... or an aspect that was important in your development etc. We could use as many visual aids as possible including photos... illustrations... diagrams or charts. We should use dates and quotes etc to support our delivery. We had 2-3 weeks to prepare and would have to present to the whole class, our tutors and maybe the head of School. This was an exercise in reading the brief and following instructions.

I spent the next few weeks preparing. Because I was the only Maori in my class/school...I decided to make my presentation about... our meeting house and Maori art. I titled it “Our House... Our History” and focused on the poupou, tukutuku and kowhaiwhai. I used photographs... I used some illustrations... I used diagrams to show the layout etc. I told the story of how the poupou and wooden carvings focused on the people, the whanau and iwi. I told about how the kowhaiwhai and tukutuku patterns focused on the environment etc. I told about the tribal history within the confines of our house.

I was pretty happy with what I prepared and was both nervous and keen to present. On the day... we all headed off to the seminar room to begin what was effectively an exam. No one really wanted to start... except the usual suspects... 3 or 4 of the leading students. There was some pretty good stuff to... a mix of modern art and some of the old masters. Leo Davinci was there... Monet made it there... the one eared guy... Mikey Angelo was there... as was the Bauhaus movement. So many heroes... so many perspectives... so many techniques... it was quite intimidating.

Then it was my turn. I got an gave a pretty good talk on our meeting house and how it had influenced my being... the carvings... the tukutuku... the kowhaiwhai. The audience was in silence... completely focused on my every word. They looked at each other... they looked at my artwork... they looked at the photos. I had about 20 illustrations on my flip chart... and after about 12-13 minutes I had flipped through them all... I made my summary... and finished. They all clapped and cheered... which was truly amazing... cos I said the whole thing in Maori.

Then the teacher said to me... wow... can I get a translation into English? I said NO... not unless everyone else gives me a translation into Maori. He cracked up... looked at me and said true... the brief didn't say it had to be in English did it? ...I got an A+...

LONG LIVE THE KING

The birth of a little whipper snapper in Great Britain has generated much conversation all around the globe. It seems like a good time to take a good long look at the Royal family and their place in modern NZ. What real value do they add to our lives and how exactly does OUR-tearoa benefit from the COMMONWEALTH. Well I'm not sure about the rest of NZ... but Maori have benefited from the royals via the Treaty of Waitangi.

That treaty signed between IWI and the CROWN is the cornerstone document of our country... and it has given Maori the confidence... and the legal platform to fight for our rights. Our official connection with the Royals began on Feb 6 1840 and every time we celebrate the treaty, we celebrate that relationship. I am worried about the constitution conversation currently in progress. What is motivating that korero?

I wonder what will happen if we become a republic... what will become of the Treaty if the CROWN are no longer part of our structure. Will that impact on our rights. Is this conversation about releasing ourselves from the royal grip... or is it about finding another way round the treaty.
Good luck Will and Kate... and the little guy... nau mai haere mai ki te aomarama

ADD VALUE TO YOUR LIFE

Say goodbye to those who dont... add value to your life
It's the only one you have... the only one you'll ever get
So make it work for you... theres no room for negatives

CRUCIFY MY MIND

I will not prostitute my values... nor will I crucify my mind
by worrying about people who don't care about themselves

SOCIAL CONCIENCE

The other night... I asked a friend not to visit me anymore... I finally had enough and insisted she didn't come round to my place. Not because I don't like her... not because we don't have fun. BUT because she insists on driving home when she gets drunk. She's started turning up half drunk.

Try as I might to keep her here... or offer alternatives... she simply ignores me... or anyone else who's here and takes-off anyway. We tried talking to her... even while shes sober. She will not listen... and doesn't care about what people think. I just don't want to be responsible for her... I couldn't... and I'm sure nobody could... live with the guilt... if something happens to her... or even worse... if someone else is injured or killed.

Especially if she spent the night drinking at my place... As I told her... "your the person we all warn our teenagers about... you're out there" ironically she has teenagers too... I can' be a party to that kind of behavior... and never will...‪#‎drinkdrivingkillstheparty‬

I AM AN ARTIST

I’m no intellectual... no scholar... no academic... I’m no millionaire... no business man... no tycoon... I am no politician... no player... no poet... I’m no lecturer... no teacher... no student. I’m no super hero... no law man... and certainly no crim... I'm just me... AN ARTIST... an author... a story teller and I make no apology for who I am. I am a bringer of light... a holder of the tribal flame... a gatherer of the word... and a keeper of the knowledge... I THINK... THEREFORE I AM...

PIKE RIVER MINE

On November 19 2010... 29 men got ready for work... 29 lunches were packed... 29 pairs of boots were strapped up... 29 hard hats were donned... and 29 goodbyes were said. Unfortunately... for these 29... they would never ever return. A gas leak... a huge explosion... and 29 men perish... 29 lives lost... 29 families grieve... and 29 tragic stories left unfinished in the cold, dark depths of Pike River Mine.

Yesterday Police announced... that no-one was at fault... no one is accountable... and no one will answer for the deaths of these men. The cries for a corporate manslaughter law grow louder and louder.

Despite the massive loss of life... no one is responsible... HOW CAN THAT BE? ....HOW CAN THE MINING COMPANY GET AWAY WITH THAT? At the very least... the 29 dead men... the 29 families... and the 29 tragic stories... deserve closure... they deserve a proper send off... and they deserve to finally take their work boots off...

HINETITAMA & HINENUIOTEPO

Hinenuitepo was the daughter of Tane-Mahuta and Hineahuone. In fact she began life as Hinetitama… the first born child. It was Tane Mahuta who created Hineahuone from the soil of his mother. He desired a woman to take as his wife and thus he approached Papatuanuku… and asked to use the sacred soils of Kurawaka. She agreed and Tane began to shape Hineahuone from the soil. Then he used his nose to breath into her nostrils and the life force passed from Tane to Hineahuone.

She began to move slowly and soon Hineahuone open her eyes and took a deep gasp of breath… just then Tane uttered those life giving words… Tihei Mauriora (let there be life). Tane then took Hineahuone as his wife and soon they had a daughter called Hinetitama. In a sense Hinetitama is the seed of mortal man and begins our whakaheke (line of descent) from the Gods and the Heavens. Hinetitama grew up with her mother Hineahuone. So infrequent was her contacts with her father, so infrequent were his visits that she didn’t really know who he was. Hinetitama grew into a very beautiful young woman.

One day the great lord of the forests visited Hinetitama’s village. Tane Mahuta was so taken by her beauty that eventually he asked her to be one of his wives. In her ignorance Hinetitama blissfully accepted. She was honoured to be the wife of a great god Tane-Mahuta. They lived together in Tane’s village. Not long after their union was confirmed, with the birth of children, Hinetitama’s relatives told her the truth about her husband. She was consumed by shame and wanted to hide from the world. Hinetitama ran off toward the underground determine to hide her shame in the shadows of the underworld. It was a long way to the dark lands but Hinetitama would not stop to rest.

Tane was overwhelmed with grief and despair when he heard his young bride had run-off and he chased after Hinetitama as fast as he could. Tane caught up with Hinetitama at the entrance to the great underground caves near the edge of the world. He pleaded with her to return to the world of light and their children… but Hinetitama’s shame was so great… she could not. She told Tane that he alone should return to the world of living light. He should take care of their children in that world, his world of knowledge, understanding and life. She promised that when their children died, they’d travel to the underworld, to her world. And there… she would take care of them in the shadows of the darkness.

Then Hinetitama entered the caves of eternal darkness and vowed never to look back. Soon after that… she changed her name to Hinenuitepo the great Goddess of the Night. Thus the world of light and the world of darkness are closely related… and one without the other is impossible. Indeed all things are balanced and equal… good and evil… light and dark… life and death... Tihei mauri ora... Let there be life!!!

ABOUT THE PAKEHA PARTY

Here’s the thing about the Pakeha Party... Despite the perceived racism (I disagree)... despite the provocative status updates... and despite the political ranting of the lead idiot... the only people who should be worried about these clowns actually contesting the election... are politically right parties like National and Act... because they will be the biggest losers if that happens. The people flocking to the Pakeha Party page... to effectively establish a ‘third right’ party are unlikely to be Maori Party or Mana supporters... Nope these guys are shooting the far right parties in the foot.

Its unlikely Labour supporters will agree with their radical views (but some might)... and likewise with the Greens. Of course New Zealand First might contribute some of their support but... the white flight to the right movement will not impact much on the two Maori parties. If anything the introduction of a ‘Pakeha Party’ does more to help the Maori parties... and does even more damage to National/Acts chances of re-election than any other political maneuvers we’ve seen in the past two terms. John Key will be shitting himself because this party will split his vote... and rob him of his support... BUGGER.

Perhaps the two Maori parties should use this to reconnect themselves... then sit back and watch the far right parties tear each other to bits. It’s like the ultimate karma as all the talk since the by-election has been about the two Maori parties splitting their vote. Let’s see how National deals with it. I can see quite a few cups of tea on offer... or should that be MUGS of tea... lol

LEADERSHIP

One of our most powerful proverbs is “Ko te kai a te rangatira - he korero” and basically translates to “The food of chiefs - is the spoken word” and helps illustrate the importance of our oral traditions. Traditional leadership was essentially hierarchical and largely based on whakapapa... but that did not mean leaders would not emerge from the wider whanau. These people often lead byexample and rather than set out to become leader... they tended to find themselves with dedicated followers.

A chief has many qualities from understanding the tribal histories... appreciating the tribal environment... standing up for the tribal mana... and endorsing the loyalty of their people. To do this a leader needed to communicate on many levels... and his word was literally his bond. A real leader needs to consider all aspects of his responsibility... he needs to be aware of all points of the emotional compass... be aware of the impact and outcomes of any decisions they make.

A chief must consider the importance of our yesterdays... he must look at the relevance of today’s issues... as well as have a full consideration for tomorrow and how his words will shape the future. That is why our chiefs developed a platform to verbalize their whakaaro... that’s why they consider each and every word they use... that’s why they choose wisely the kupu korero they deliver. Chiefs use their words to paint pictures in the minds of their listeners... they use their reo as a chisel to shape the thoughts of their audience... they use their korero to inspire and motivate their people. They use language to bind the iwi together.

“Ko te kai a te rangatira - he korero” ...KOINA...
what they say is who they are... MAURIORA

THE PAKEHA PARTY

The Pakeha Party are well within their rights to establish a page... a group... or even a political party... this is OUR-tearoa... and this is how we roll down these ways. But creating a Facebook page and making anon comments from behind the keyboard is hardly an action group. As we all know on Facebook 'talk is cheap' and I'm not to fussed about reading any of the comments dropped on a only Pakeha page.

When they mobilize their people... and take their cause to the streets... when they find the courage to verbalise their demands in a public place... when they finally have the conviction to remove the digital balaclava... We will all be waiting with baited breath to here the virtues of their thinking about Maori rights... Pakeha rights... or perhaps even the third right. lol

When they finally sit in parliament (next to the Maori Party)... we'll see just how robust their leadership is. We'll hear them in the debating chamber clarifying their vision for a better New Zealand... and we'll see if they really want the same rights as Maori (like pakeha language week maybe)...

Atta bei... a like on facebook... does not equal a vote in parliament... Otherwise the RANDOM MAORI FULLAS would be in Government right now...lol...‎#kiarongongarohipakehama

THE CHOCOLATE FISH SCAM

Hey you know that AMP ad on TV... the one with the little kids and the chocolate fish... My favourite is the kid who eats the fish... I would eat my fish too... for sure. So what’s that all about anyway?... how many people would put a chocolate fish in front of their children... then tell them NOT to eat it till later... is that really a lesson in finance... or prime time child abuse for commercial gain.

They claim that if you don’t eat the fish... they’ll double it... BUT that sounds too good to be true right?... No one doubles your fish. You might earn yourself another tail... some fins... a head and gills even... but no one doubles your fish... and anyone who says they can... sound like real sharks to me. Remember all the other finance companies who said they could double your fish... well they lost an entire ocean full of fish. In reality... the finance company fat cats ate the bloody fish... some of them are still eating the fish today... and many innocent investors were left... well... fishless. Obviously AMP think taking your fish... is as easy as taking candy from our babies... Hmmm what’s wrong with that image?
